Making an Application

Before completing your application, please read the job description and person specification.  These outline the key responsibilities and the skills, qualifications and qualities required of the post holder.  You will need to demonstrate that you either already have these or have the potential to meet the requirements of the person specification in order to be considered for interview.

Completing the Application Form

All candidates are required to complete an application form using MyNewTerm. Unfortunately, due to our safeguarding obligations, we are unable to accept CVs without an accompanying application. Applications for teaching positions should also include details of results achieved.

Candidates should note that all claims and statements of skills, experience and employment will be checked.  In the event of false claims being made, any offer of employment will be terminated.

The Supporting Statement

In your supporting statement you should demonstrate how your qualifications and experience match the criteria outlined in the job description and person specification.  We will be looking, in particular, for information about:

  • The ways in which you feel your previous and current education, training and/or experience have prepared you for the post
  • Your achievements to date

References

Suitable referees are people who have had direct recent experience of your work and who are in responsible positions.  If you have had a recent break in your work history, you may wish to nominate someone who has known you for a long time or perhaps been connected with any voluntary work you may have undertaken.  If you are currently employed or have been employed, you are asked to give your current or most recent employer.  If you are a trainee/student, please give an academic referee.

The college may contact past employers, other than referees, for information to verify particular experience or qualifications.

As the successful applicant will be working with, or coming into extensive contact with, young people, requests for references include a specific question about the applicant’s suitability for this.

Arrangements for Interview

The interview will usually be held within two weeks of the closing date.  Should the selection process incorporate any assessment, full details will be included in the email inviting you to attend the interview.

The Interview and Selection Day

All interviews are a two way process and should give you the opportunity to decide if Sir John Deane’s is the right place for you. Throughout the day, college will assess your suitability for the post and the college community.

It is usual that, following morning activities, some candidates, but not all, will be invited to go to the final stage of selection which will be a formal interview with the Principal and other senior staff.

All offers of employment are dependent upon the candidate’s references, health questionnaire and criminal record check being satisfactory.

Data Protection

Completed application forms and supplementary information provided by you in support of your application will be retained by the Personnel Department in a secure place for a period of up to 12 months. Further information is available in the candidate privacy notice.

Candidates Data Privacy Policy

Employment of people with a criminal record

Please be aware that it is an offence to apply for a role that involves engaging in regulated activity relevant to children if you have been barred from such activity.

You are advised that the post for which you are applying will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check as it is included in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (2013 and 2020). The college can only ask about convictions and cautions that are not considered protected and guidance about whether a conviction or caution should be disclosed can be obtained from the Ministry of Justice, Nacro or Unlock websites.

A criminal record will not automatically prevent anyone from employment with Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College. The college will assess the relevance of any criminal record and having ‘spent’ or ‘unspent’ convictions will not necessarily bar an individual from employment. This will depend upon the relevance and circumstances relating to the offence and any such information will be treated in the strictest confidence and will only be used in consideration of your suitability for appointment.

If you do not declare any previous criminal conviction, cautions and reprimands, these may be discussed with you prior to a decision being taken on your appointment. If you are appointed to the post, failure to disclose any convictions not considered protected could result in the offer of appointment being withdrawn or disciplinary action being taken and possibly the police notified.

Recruitment of Ex-Offenders Policy

Applicants with a Disability

If you are selected for interview and you have a disability we will discuss any reasonable adjustments with you at the interview stage.

Equal Opportunities Monitoring

We value diversity and want to maintain a workforce that has a wide range of skills, qualifications and experiences.

Monitoring this data helps us to understand if our recruitment and selection policies and practices are fair and objective to everyone and that we are attracting applications from the widest range of candidates.

All job applicants will be asked for the same equality monitoring information.  This information does not form any part of your application and is removed from your application form before submission to the short listing stage.

Receiving a Response

Regrettably, due to the high volume of applications, it is not always possible to notify all candidates of the outcome of their application.  If you have not heard from us within 2 weeks of the closing date, it is unlikely your application has been shortlisted.
